Nanowrimo Revisited… The Now What? Months
Now that you’ve had some time away from your initial draft of your novel, it’s time to revisit that creative story you’ve written. The creators of Nanowrimo have collected some “Now What?” TIPS to help guide you further in reaching your goal of writing a successful novel and offer many helpful ideas online… We’ve included some here to get you started and revisiting your novel!!
SOOOOO…. The first step is to re-read, your novel… Can think of anything to write/add? Writer’s Block?
Take breaks (which we did)....Add twists...Develop another character…Use different points-of-view....Jump to a new scene...Be daring, create the unexpected...Use pictures, lyrics, whatever to inspire you...Don’t listen to your inner critic (at least not on the first draft)...Keep writing, you can delete later!
Revising...Making that story better!!!
Editing...Making that story EVEN better!

- Read your story aloud...yes, again. Record it as you read it….
- Envision your novel as a movie!
- Use your 5 senses throughout… (vivid, sensory details)
- Add figurative language (simile/metaphor)
- Further develop your interesting characters and conflict.
- Add dialogue that “moves the plot forward.” (Avoid confusion...punctuate it correctly, too!)
- Use precise wording…Consult a thesaurus for more interesting, accurate words to SHOW your story!
Editing...Making that story EVEN better!
- Proof-read your novel.
- Analyze each sentence… (Yes, each sentence…individually.)
- CHECK Grammar, punctuation, spelling, word choice, verb tense…
- Dialogue Formatting?! Stuck? See “Dialogue Formatting” page for review!
- Sentence structure? VARY it! Simple, compound, complex…
- CHECK Grammar, punctuation, spelling, word choice, verb tense…
- Re-read your novel again…
- Have others read/edit it too. (Allow them to offer suggestions…)
